The St Francis Ward was the first of two wards that were refurbished by the Collins healthcare team in 2018 for the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth. Working alongside Sonnemann Toon, a design was created that was exclusive to their facility and could be rolled out on all future refurbishment projects. The final result was a one-off bedhead design and room layout that gave the client the high end look and feel they desired whilst including all necessary clinical requirements.
The project involved the stripping out of all 15 bedrooms and en suite bathrooms back to bare walls and included the replacement of all services. New veneer and glass bedheads were installed which had been stylishly designed to house necessary outlets including power, data and medical gas, as well as offering a bespoke look and feel to the rooms. The same wall also housed dimmable lighting as well as unique examination lights, replacing the dated wall lights, for clinicians to undertake bedside examinations and procedures.
A new AC system was also installed with state of the art bluetooth controllers along with clinical IPS units and self-purging taps, enhancing patient control of their environment and improving infection control management.
All bedrooms benefited from brand new en suite bathrooms which were extended and made into modern wet rooms to replace the existing bath/shower units. These rooms were clad with hygienic wall finishes and benefited from bespoke Hewi sinks and a non-slip hygienic flooring and shower heads that changed colour to indicate the need for descaling.
The ward was completed with a new bright and airy reception to welcome both staff and patients alike. The desk, made of corian and vaneer, was finished with a raised muraspect panel and neutral colours to compliment the rest of the ward.
